Getting To Know Our People

Char-Lien Lim - Senior Associate

Char-Lien joined HomeLegal in 2008 after 4 years in general practice as a solicitor with an Upper Hutt law firm. Char-Lien spent the last 3 months of 2009 in China on an intensive Chinese language course taking her already advanced Mandarin skills to a new level. She leads a very busy life outside work and is involved with Girl Guiding NZ at a regional level. Char-Lien is a great help to non-English speaking Chinese clients.

 Char-Lien Q and A

  1. Why did you become a lawyer?
I really wanted to help people. At university, when I couldn’t even prick my own finger for biochemistry, it dawned on me that medicine probably wasn’t going to be my thing. I crashed my friend’s law lectures and really enjoyed them. I changed to studying law as I realised that if I became a lawyer I could help people, especially my friends, family and the Chinese community to easily and happily navigate their every day legal issues.
  2. When you are not being a lawyer what do you like doing most?
Hanging out at home with friends or cooking up a storm.
  3. Where is your special place in the region?
The Hutt Memorial Library – I’ve had a library card since I was tiny and can’t remember not being able to read. I love getting out more books than I can carry. I have to be disciplined though because I can’t put a book down until I’ve finished reading it even if that’s 4am!
Being dragged out into the many regional parks by my husband. Kaitoke Regional Park is really pretty and so is the Dry Water Creek “wet foot” track in Belmont Regional Park.
  4. What is your favourite shop/restaurant?
Ichiban opposite the Hutt Memorial Library. They have the best roast duck with ho fun (thick rice noodles) in soup as well as lots of other cheap good eats.
  5. How would you describe your style of practice?
A good dose of common sense, practical with attention to the details and getting things just right for my clients.
  6. If you had to give a first homebuyer a single piece of advice, what would it be?
Come and see me before you start looking. There’s lots of things I can help you with that will make the whole house buying or selling process less stressful and could head off unexpected nasty surprises.
  7. What is different about the HomeLegal service that makes it so popular?
The nifty Keytrack technology and being able to talk to and be looked after by a real lawyer
